Polygon MATIC to POL Token Migration: September 2024
On September 4, 2024, Polygon began its official migration from the MATIC token to the new POL token as part of the Polygon 2.0 roadmap. This was one of the most significant structural changes in the project's history.
Why Did Polygon Rebrand MATIC to POL?
Polygon 2.0 introduced a unified multi-chain architecture designed to support a growing network of ZK-powered Layer-2 chains. The POL token was designed to serve as the ecosystem-wide utility token across all of these chains, replacing MATIC which had been primarily associated with the Polygon PoS chain.
POL is used for staking, validator incentives, governance coordination, and ecosystem participation. The rebrand aimed to position Polygon as a broader "Internet of Blockchains" rather than a single sidechain solution.
Key Details of the Migration
- Migration start date: September 4, 2024
- Total supply: 10 billion tokens (same as MATIC)
- Migration ratio: 1 MATIC = 1 POL
- Old MATIC tokens can be swapped to POL through the official Polygon migration portal
- POL is used for staking on Polygon PoS and future Polygon 2.0 chains
Price Impact of the Rebrand
The token migration did not immediately boost prices. While the MATIC token had previously traded above $1, POL entered 2026 trading around $0.095–$0.10. Market conditions, including broader crypto sentiment and Ethereum competition, weighed on performance despite the technical upgrade.
Polygon Previously Rebranded Once Before
This was not the first rebrand for the project. The original Matic Network rebranded to Polygon in February 2021, which at the time triggered a massive price rally. The 2024 MATIC-to-POL migration was a deeper structural change at the token level rather than just a name change.
